Significant rise in mobile phone thefts revealed.

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

300,000 mobile phones are stolen every year in the United Kingdom and the police have revealed that this alarming number is set to rise.

It is thought that the economic downturn has lead to a sharp increase in this type of crime.

Smartphones are expensive to buy and therefore, they are worth a lot of money.

In the majority of cases, stolen smartphones are sold on to mobile phone recycling firms or sent abroad where a larger return can be made.

In Islington alone, mobile phone thefts have increased by 400% over the last year.

Generally, mobile phones are stolen in busy spaces where there are lots of people such as streets, restaurants and concerts.

The police force are urging people to think carefully about using mobile phones in public places and follow these guidelines:

  • Don’t draw attention to your mobile phone
  • Remain aware of the people around you
  • Go inside a shop to use your phone, rather than staying on the street
  • If possible, keep your phone tucked away in a bag or in a zipped pocket

However, if you are unlucky and your mobile phone is stolen, follow these simple steps:

  • Contact the police as soon as possible.
The quicker the better. Police are able to access CCTV footage and acting quickly could help them to catch a criminal.
  • Call your mobile phone service provider and ask them to block your handset so it can’t be used to make calls.
Whilst blocking a handset can stop calls within the UK, a phone could still be used abroad so it’s best to inform your network as soon as possible so you don’t run the risk of getting a large bill that’s not yours!

Dispute between Apple and Motorola continues in Germany.

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Manufacturing giant Apple has received a temporary suspension of a sales ban which had previously been imposed on a selection of its products in Germany.

Last December, a court ruled in favour of Motorola Mobility after Apple infringed a patent law, regarding a “method for performing a countdown function”, forcing the Californian based company to withdraw several products from its online store.

These products included a range of  iPad and iPhone models.

Currently, Motorola and Apple are locked in a dispute over a number of patent infringements that are yet to be resolved.

It is understood that an appeals court has lifted the ban following Apple’s revised offer of payment for a new licence.

Therefore, Apple is due to restart sales of its devices in the country, even though the suspension may end in just a few days or weeks.

Regardless of this move, it is feared that many German users of Apple products will no longer be able to access iCloud and its associated services, regarding a separate patent which relates to “two-way communication between pagers and other devices”.

Interestingly, whilst the two companies are currently disputing patents in Germany, the outcome may implicate other pending European lawsuits.

It remains to be seen whether the two companies will be able to settle their differences without causing major disruption to customers worldwide.

MPs suggest spreading awareness, not fear, over cybersecurity.

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

A group of MPs has suggested that the Government should focus on spreading awareness of cybersecurity, rather than “scaring people” about the dangers of using the internet.

This notion was put forward by the Commons Science and Technology Committee which stated that malicious software, or malware as it is known, was gaining momentum as more and more businesses use the internet as a revenue stream.

In a recent report into cybercrime and associated security released by the Committee, it said safeguards in order to combat cyber attacks were routine and as long as members of the public take “sensible precautions” then the internet remains a “reasonably safe place”.

The Committee also said that a TV campaign around the subject of cybercrime would help to raise awareness and, it would help, if it contained less jargon than current information.

In a speech, the Committee’s Chairman, Labour MP Andrew Miller stated: “Knowledge is the best defence against fear”.

He added that the Government’s current Get Safe Online website requires better promotion and suggested that all internet-enabled communication devices should be sold with advice on personal safety.

Only time will tell if the suggestion is put in to practice.

1.5bn phones now operating S40 says Nokia.

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has revealed that nearly 2 billion phones now run the firm’s successful S40 operating system.

The first phone to run using S40 was sold in 1999.

Since then, the easy to use operating system has been used across many of Nokia’s devices.

Many feature phones operate using S40 with the benefits including:

  • Good battery power
  • Significant phone memory
  • Ability to run applications

Whilst the S40 feature phones are unable to compete with the high-end smartphone market, the phones remain ever popular:

  • There are an estimated 675 million active owners of S40 phones
  • Nokia currently sells 12 S40 phones each second
  • Each day 3.7 million app downloads are registered for S40 phones

Most recently, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 800 complete with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 software alongside a new range of S40 phones under the ‘Asha’ brand.

Nokia believes that the S40 operating system will remain popular for the moment, with new devices due to be launched in February.

530 million mobile banking users predicted by 2013.

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

A recent report by Juniper Research has revealed that the number of mobile banking users globally will reach 530 million by 2013.

This is a significant rise from the 300 million recorded users in 2011.

The report also suggests that mobile services are now a considered aspect of banks’ business strategies, in response to the current economic climate.

More and more banks are moving away from the ‘bricks and mortar’ branch based revenue streams and are instead turning towards mobile banking or ‘mBanking’ as it is known.

Described as a ‘cost-effective communication channel’, mBanking offers the opportunity to improve upon operational efficiencies alongside customer retention and acquisition.

Many high street banks are now meeting consumer demands by creating smartphone and tablet applications, particularly as the consumer smartphone becomes more prevalent.

However, Juniper’s report also warns that banks and financial institutions would be wise to introduce SMS and browser-based channels alongside apps to keep ahead of their competitors.

Samsung predicts profits rise on smartphone sales.

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung has reported that it predicts a rise in profits for the final quarter of 2011, largely accountable to smartphone sales.

The firm expects its operating profits for the last three months of 2011 to stand at 5.2 trillion (£2.9 billion).

This figure is indicative of a 73% rise when compared to last year.

In 2011, Samsung overtook its rival Apple to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer.

However, the two smartphone giants have been involved in a number of patent disputes over the last few months.

Industry analysts have said that Samsung’s profits are likely to rise again this year.

Later this month, Samsung is due to publish its official results for the final quarter of 2011.

Last week of December breaks app download record.

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

According to a recent study, more than a billion apps have been downloaded in a single week, breaking the current record.

Flurry, an analytics firm has reported that a total of 1.2 billion apps were downloaded in the last week of December.

It is understood that this activity remained buoyant due to the fact that many users receive new devices for Christmas as well as many companies offering discounted apps during Christmas week.

In terms of country, the United States downloaded the most apps, quickly followed by China and the United Kingdom.

The UK itself downloaded a reported 81 million apps.

It is hoped this trend will continue through 2012.

KnowYourPlanet Director brings aid to Africa.

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

KnowYourPlanet, a company based in North London, is planning a trip to Africa in February to distribute its DIY solar kits which have the ability to recharge phones and batteries.

In Africa, many people have little or no access to electricity.

Following the boom in mobile phone ownership across the continent, it is not unusual for people to walk for several hours to charge their phones.

However, it is hoped that the DIY solar kits will change this.

Mark Kragh, Director of KnowYourPlanet, aims to build 1000 of the simple solar panel kits when he arrives in Kenya, training local people how to make, use and service the panels themselves.

KnowYourPlanet has the ultimate goal of creating a 64p solar charger which has at least a five year lifespan.

Motorola Mobility in patent dispute with Microsoft.

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Microsoft has won a patent dispute with Motorola Mobility following a preliminary ruling by a US trade panel judge.

The patent concerns technology techniques used to schedule meetings and synchronise group calendars via a smartphone.

There were six other Microsoft patents which had been disputed by the International Trade Commission ruled that these had not been violated by Motorola Mobility.

It is understood that following this ruling, Motorola Mobility will be required to omit this technology from future devices and handsets.

Microsoft will now be in a stronger position to pursue other patent cases and licence fees from other Android-based handset manufacturers.

Apple wins HTC patent battle.

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

HTC, the Taiwanese mobile phone manufacturer, has lost a US patent clash against rival company Apple.

The International Trade Commission has ruled that HTC infringed one patent, a user-interface feature known as “data tapping”, which is currently held by Apple.

However, whilst the news doesn’t seem to fare in HTC’s favour, the ruling comes as a relief to HTC with the company now only needing to surrender one feature.

The ruling states that any HTC phones that use the technology covered by the patent will be banned from sale in the US from 19 April 2012.

HTC has announced that it will remove the feature from all of their phones soon.

Currently, California-based Apple is at the centre of numerous patent disputes in Europe, Asia and Australia.
