Ofcom revised 4G coverage to include ‘not-spots’.

Friday, January 13th, 2012

98% of the UK could now benefit from 4G coverage following a revision to proposals by telecoms watchdog Ofcom regarding the mobile spectrum auction.

The regulator has announced that the winning bidder is required to provide high-speed coverage to rural ”not-spot” areas.

Ofcom previously stipulated that the winning bidder would need to roll out a 4G network to 95% of the UK population.

However, following the revisions, this amount has now been extended to 98%.

It is hoped these guidelines will allow sections of the country that currently receive no service to benefit from fast mobile internet.

Ofcom’s revisions will now undergo a 10-week consultation, before the final decision regarding the spectrum auction is announced.

It is understood that the auction is still set to take place at the end of this year.

Virgin Media set to double customer broadband speed.

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Virgin Media has announced that it is set to double the speed of its broadband offering for over four million of its current customers.

Due to start in 2012, the service upgrade will see speeds increase from 100Mbps to 120Mbps.

Expected to be completed by the end of June 2013, the move is reportedly costing Virgin Media the sum of £110 million.

David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has hailed this step forward as a ”great boost” to the UK.

Many members of parliament are in agreement, particularly as the investment supports the Government’s policy to deliver super-fast broadband to 90% of the UK by 2015.

However, Virgin Media mostly services urban areas, with critics worried that rural areas may fall by the wayside when it comes to broadband availability.

Only time will tell whether the roll out will be successful.

Obsession with email set to impact festive holidays.

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

According to a recent survey, over half of employees in the UK plan to check their work email accounts over the Christmas holidays.

The study, undertaken by security firm Securenvoy, suggests that staff within the 18-24 year old category are most likely to view their work emails during the break.

However, of the 1,000 people in full-time work surveyed, the over 50 bracket appeared to be less concerned with checking their work updates.

Experts agree that employees in their twenties are becoming addicted to online communication, with the younger generation more digitally connected than its older peers.

The survey also revealed the following statistics:

  • 31% of those surveyed plan to check work emails intermittently during the break
  • 15% intend to check them frequently
  • 34% said they had no intention of checking their emails
  • 1 in 5 questioned said they would feel “competitively disadvantaged” if they did not keep on top of their messages

Autumn statement reveals broadband funding.

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

UK broadband networks in 10 cities across the UK are set to benefit from Government funding.

In the Autumn statement Chancellor George Osborne announed that £5bn is due to be spent on infrastructure projects in order to improve roads, railways and broadband networks.

It is understood that £100m of this figure is set to be spent on improving broadband coverage in London, Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff.

A further six UK cities are set to be identified at a later date.

The Government plans to create a network of super-fast cities with broadband speeds of between 80 to 100 Mbps (megabits per second) and city-wide high-speed mobile connectivity.

A spokesman for BT said the company welcomed the news, calling the scheme a “positive initiative”.

However, whilst some providers are happy with this move, critics have suggested that it would have been better to channel the money into broadband networks in rural locations.

The Government has maintained its aim for the UK to be the best place for broadband in Europe by 2015.

Black Friday creates opportunity for hackers.

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Traditionally the 25th of November is named Black Friday.

This term was originally adopted by Philadelphia’s police department in 1960s to describe the day following Thanksgiving due to the traffic jams caused by numerous people trying to visit the city’s shopping district.

Today, retailers across the world view Black Friday as the start of the Christmas shopping season, often offering significant deals and discounts to customers to encourage spending.

However, Black Friday and the subsequent shopping period has also become a target for hackers and spammers in order to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers.

Two known malware attacks have already been reported by the Eleven security blog.

An email claiming to come from Apple’s iTunes store has been sent to users offering them $50 (£32) of iTunes store credit and asking them to open an attached file to find out the gift certificate code.

However, once the file is opened, hackers are able to gain passwords, infect programs and delete files stored on the computer.

Security adviser Sophos has also reported a similar email threat linked to Facebook.

During the next month all consumers are asked to bear in mind that reputable retailers and social media accounts will never ask you to disclose sensitive personal details.

O2 ‘4G’ LTE mobile data trial begins in London.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

From today, mobile network O2 will begin to test a next-generation mobile data service in London.

The trial is expected to last nine months and during this time hundreds of consumers and businesses will use a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network which stretches across parts of the city.

It is understood that LTE downloads will be much faster when compared to those over 3G.

However, whilst O2 describes the service as 4G, the International Telecommunications Union has defined LTE as being 3.9G as it falls short one one gigabit per second transfers.

Those participating in the trial will be given a dongle broadband for use with their computers allowing them to access the 2.6Ghz spectrum.

They have also been promised download speeds of up to 50 megabits per second.

Ofcom plans to hold an auction for the LTE radio spectrum at the end of 2012.

Cyber bullying to be addressed in Northern Ireland.

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Today marks the start of anti-bullying week with 650 schools across Northern Ireland set to explore the impact of cyber bullying.

The Department of Education research in Northern Ireland has released results of a recent survey which suggests 15.5% of Year 6 pupils and 17% of Year 9 pupils have experienced cyber bullying this year alone.

It is understood that three quarters of teachers present in post-primary schools surveyed claimed cyber bullying was more prevalent.

It is hoped that anti-bullying week will allow teachers and parents a channel in which to challenge all methods of bullying.

Cyber bullying can be conducted via mobile phones, online gaming, email and social networking.

Ofcom report reveals trends in telecoms.

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

According to research, British households download 17 gigabytes of data on average each month via their home broadband connections.

The report, conducted by communications regulator Ofcom, takes an in-depth look at the condition of the UK’s digital communications.

The study has revealed which regions offer suitable broadband, mobile and digital radio coverage and those which are lacking.

In order to visualise the research, Ofcom has produced maps which grade different regions in terms of the varying technologies that are supported within the area.

In the report, the UK is divided into 200 areas which are graded on a scale of 1-5 depending on how well particular technologies work within the region.

Areas with good scores included Birmingham, Lancashire and West Sussex.

However, sparsely populated areas such as mid-Wales and the Scottish highlands received low scores.

It is understood that the data collated through the research will be used to determine how to spend £150 million of Goverment funding to tackle the country’s not-spots.

GCHQ alerts Government to combat cyber attacks.

Monday, October 31st, 2011

According to the communications intelligence agency GCHQ, a disturbing number of cyber attacks have targeted the UK.

GCHQ Director Iain Lobban also highlighted a ’significant’ yet unsuccessful cyber attack on computer systems belonging to the Foreign Office.

It is understood that sensitive Government data has been targeted by these attacks alongside information regarding defence, technology and engineering firms’ designs.

Tomorrow, the Government is due to hold a two-day conference on the issue of cyberspace security.

Political leaders including Foreign Secretary William Hague and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in attendance alongside selected cyber security experts and technology entrepreneurs such as Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Cisco’s Brad Boston.

Last year the Government announced an extra £650 million of additional funding to help combat cyber based threats.

Fast rural broadband to be offered to UK by Fujitsu.

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

In direct competition with BT’s service, Fujitsu has announced plans to create a superfast broadband network which will service rural areas of the UK.

This announcement comes as recent research revealed that 1% of UK households currently have access to superfast broadband, with consistent speeds over 25Mbps.

This network, which will be open to local authorities, will be used by Virgin Media and TalkTalk to provide internet services.

In order to provide the services, Fujitsu has requested £500m if Government money needed to fund the project.

It is understood that this sum would account for almost all of the £530m that the Government have set aside for use on rural broadband projects.

A further £300m in funding from the BBC licence fee is set to become available after 2015.

The Fujitsu network will offer fibre optic cabling or Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) directly to rural parts of the UK bringing with it speeds in excess of 1Gbps or more.

In comparison, BT’s superfast network which relies mainly on slower Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology which can offer speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Assuming they are successful, Fujitsu aim to add their ‘first retail customer in 2012 and reach 5 million in three to five years’.
