Ofcom report reveals trends in telecoms.

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

According to research, British households download 17 gigabytes of data on average each month via their home broadband connections.

The report, conducted by communications regulator Ofcom, takes an in-depth look at the condition of the UK’s digital communications.

The study has revealed which regions offer suitable broadband, mobile and digital radio coverage and those which are lacking.

In order to visualise the research, Ofcom has produced maps which grade different regions in terms of the varying technologies that are supported within the area.

In the report, the UK is divided into 200 areas which are graded on a scale of 1-5 depending on how well particular technologies work within the region.

Areas with good scores included Birmingham, Lancashire and West Sussex.

However, sparsely populated areas such as mid-Wales and the Scottish highlands received low scores.

It is understood that the data collated through the research will be used to determine how to spend £150 million of Goverment funding to tackle the country’s not-spots.

GCHQ alerts Government to combat cyber attacks.

Monday, October 31st, 2011

According to the communications intelligence agency GCHQ, a disturbing number of cyber attacks have targeted the UK.

GCHQ Director Iain Lobban also highlighted a ’significant’ yet unsuccessful cyber attack on computer systems belonging to the Foreign Office.

It is understood that sensitive Government data has been targeted by these attacks alongside information regarding defence, technology and engineering firms’ designs.

Tomorrow, the Government is due to hold a two-day conference on the issue of cyberspace security.

Political leaders including Foreign Secretary William Hague and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in attendance alongside selected cyber security experts and technology entrepreneurs such as Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Cisco’s Brad Boston.

Last year the Government announced an extra £650 million of additional funding to help combat cyber based threats.

Fast rural broadband to be offered to UK by Fujitsu.

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

In direct competition with BT’s service, Fujitsu has announced plans to create a superfast broadband network which will service rural areas of the UK.

This announcement comes as recent research revealed that 1% of UK households currently have access to superfast broadband, with consistent speeds over 25Mbps.

This network, which will be open to local authorities, will be used by Virgin Media and TalkTalk to provide internet services.

In order to provide the services, Fujitsu has requested £500m if Government money needed to fund the project.

It is understood that this sum would account for almost all of the £530m that the Government have set aside for use on rural broadband projects.

A further £300m in funding from the BBC licence fee is set to become available after 2015.

The Fujitsu network will offer fibre optic cabling or Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) directly to rural parts of the UK bringing with it speeds in excess of 1Gbps or more.

In comparison, BT’s superfast network which relies mainly on slower Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology which can offer speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Assuming they are successful, Fujitsu aim to add their ‘first retail customer in 2012 and reach 5 million in three to five years’.

Indigenous languages tracked on Twitter.

Monday, April 11th, 2011

In today’s world modern technology is often blamed for phasing out traditional languages in favour of  ’internet-speak’.

Due to this, many native languages are particularly at risk of becoming endangered.

However, in a move to protect cultures and customs on the internet, Indigenoustweets.com logs Twitter users in 68 languages across the world.

The site, created by Professor of Computer Science at St. Louis University Kevin Scannell, uses a custom-built database of words and phrases to determine which Tweeters use their native language most often and then allows users to connect with each other.

According to Indigenoustweets.com, the top five most tweeted minority languages are:

  • Kreyol Ayisyen (Haiti) – 6878 users
  • Euskara (Basque Country) – 3788 users
  • Cymraeg (Wales) – 2613 users
  • Frysk (Netherlands) – 1883 users
  • Setswana (Southern Africa) – 314 users

It is thought that Twitter and other social media platforms will continue to offer opportunities for smaller languages in the future.

178 million mobile music subscribers by 2015.

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

A new report recently published by Juniper Research has predicted that the number of mobile music subscribers will reach 178 million by 2015.

This figure is more than triple the number of mobile users who paid a monthly subscription for access to music via download or streaming in 2010.

It is understood that emerging markets such as those in China and India are responsible for the rising numbers, with strong access to 3G networks.

In India, the Bollywood film industry has created a thriving market for music.

However, once popular markets such as the demand for ringtones has declined significantly in recent years.

It is thought this is due to mobile users are increasingly able to use web-based services and pre-installed apps to create their own personalised ringtones, negating the need to purchase ready created ones.

It remains to be seen whether the mobile music market will continue to thrive.

Home phone and broadband costs to be cut by Ofcom.

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Ofcom, the regulator for the telecoms industry, has moved to reduce the wholesale price of home telephone and broadband services.

It is understood that in some cases, the wholesale price could drop by more than 10% per year.

Ofcom has audited the rates that Openreach, BT’s network manager, can charge other providers for using its services.

Companies such as TalkTalk and Sky will benefit from this new change but Virgin Media, which uses its own network cables, will not.

Ofcom’s proposal is part of a consultation process that is expected to end on the 9th of June.

It is hoped that the results of this consultation will be published in the Autumn of this year.

Price fluctuations as result of the move will come into effect towards the end of 2011 and remain in place until March 2014.

Phone firms asked to remove drink-drive apps.

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

In the United States, a group of senators have contacted major smart phone firms, asking them to cease distribution of applications enabling drivers who are under the influence of alcohol to avoid police checkpoints.

Executives at Apple, Google and Research In Motion have all been called upon to help.

The applications are said to allow users to alert one another in real-time to police check points where motorists are stopped and assessed using alcohol tests.

Currently, it is understood that the apps have a combined user audience of 10 million.

The senators have argued that the apps greatly increase the risk of dangerous drivers that are on the roads, putting children, families and other road users in great danger.

More than 10,000 people are killed on US roads every year in accidents relating to driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is hoped that the removal of applications of this nature could go some way to reducing this figure.

It remains to be seen whether the applications will be removed from the market.

Young internet savvy users urged to encourage elders.

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Charity Age UK has stated a campaign which aims to encourage older UK citizens, who have never used the world wide web, to get connected and keep levels of loneliness at a low.

Age UK is also calling on younger internet users and relatives to assist the older generation in the early stages of joining the internet.

Results of a new survey suggest that less than half of the UK’s over-55s use the internet.

In direct contrast, 58% of older people are online in Norway and Luxembourg.

Statistics collated by Eurostat reveal that 43% of UK citizens aged 55-74 are web users. The average in Europe is 28%.

Social isolation is a common problem with one million older people often feeling lonely.

Age UK says that this figure can be reduced if older citizens are encouraged to use the internet to connect with friends and family across the globe.

Japan sets out to repair damaged telecoms cables.

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Following the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, aftershocks are still preventing telecommunication companies from carrying out repair work on undersea cables.

In the aftermath, traffic has been re-routed to backup cables whilst authorities decide on the best course of action.

Japan’s second largest telecoms operator, KDDI, is prepared to send out a ship equipped with remotely-controlled robots as soon as the aftershocks have stopped.

Deep water robots can dive to a depth of 2,500m to repair damaged cables and have previously been used to lay cables on the seabed.

However, the reparation task may take months to complete and this would be the robot’s biggest task to date.

Powerful aftershocks are reaching magnitudes of 6.0 and higher, making it impossible to safely restore damaged cables.

Cloud computing move for Hewlett Packard.

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

PC manufacturer Hewlett Packard has announced plans which will see the company move in to the cloud computing market.

Shipping more than two printers every second, HP is the world’s leading seller of PC’s and printers.

However, it is now understood that HP is planning to develop its own internet services and create an application store which will be accessible by consumers and businesses alike.

Some analysts have declared the move in to the cloud market as an attempt by HP to claim back market share which is currently attributed to companies such as Apple and IBM.

Chief Executive Leo Apotheker recently stated that, in the long term, HP is aiming to ‘boost earnings and increase dividends’.

The recently revealed TouchPad, HP’s first tablet computer, is due to be launched in June 2011.

It is hoped that this move in to cloud computing will secure the firm’s future as a world leading computer manufacturer.
