Internet providers to offer adult content bar.

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

BT, Sky, Talk Talk and Virgin have announced plans to offer customers the option to block adult and malicious content when they subscribe to receive the service.

It is understood this high level protection will be offered for smartphones, laptops and PCs.

However, the industry is wary of these new changes due to the current laws surrounding the issue of censorship.

Following a 2011 report by charity the Mothers’ Union, the Prime Minister David Cameron is said to support this move and is due to meet industry representatives in a bid to discuss concerns regarding the sexualisation of children.

Previously, Mr Cameron has stated that he would welcome recommendations which allow parents and guardians to block ”adult and age-restricted material” across all media.

Mr Cameron is also set to launch ParentPort, an online forum which allows parents and guardians to register complaints about material seen in media, communications and retail sectors.

Through this portal, it is hoped that keeping children safe online will become easier.
