Twitter reaches new record at 2012 Super Bowl.

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

The record for the highest number of tweets sent during a sporting event has been overturned following extensive activity on the social networking site Twitter during the Super Bowl 2012.

It is understood that 10,000 tweets were sent each second, during the last three minutes of the New York Giants’ 21-17 defeat of the New England Patriots.

In line with a last minute touchdown by the New York Giants, Twitter activity peaked and a recorded 12,233 messages were sent per second.

The half-time performance by Madonna also created a large spike in online activity, with 10,245 posts published each second.

Previous to this, the longstanding record was set when the Denver Broncos triumphed over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 NFL playoffs.

This year’s Super Bowl was the first to be streamed online.

Facebook becomes a publicly listed company.

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Social networking giant Facebook has announced its aim to become a publicly listed company this week.

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, Facebook is now reported to be worth between $75bn (£48bn) and $100bn.

According to the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal, Facebook will file papers with the US financial watchdog on Wednesday.

The floatation, which would happen later this year, would raise an estimated $10bn.

Incredibly, this move would be representative of one of the largest share sales seen on Wall Street to date.

In comparison, Google went public in 2004, raising the sum of $1.9bn.

In 2010, automobile manufacturer General Motors raised a staggering $20bn, marking the largest sale to date.

It is understood that Facebook currently makes the majority of its revenue through advertising.

Twitter able to moderate content by country.

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Social networking site Twitter has announced that it now harnesses the technology to selectively delete and block tweets simply based on country.

On Twitter’s official blog, a post revealed the site could now “reactively withhold content from users in a specific country”.

However, the site also stated that certain content would then still be available across the rest of the globe.

This move is deemed especially important for countries such as China where Twitter is currently blocked.

Twitter, as a company, is currently looking to expand its business globally.

The social networking site has always been hailed for its celebration of ‘free speech’.

However, critics have argued that this move goes against its original values.

With more than 100 million active users as of September 2011, it remains to be seen how this censorship will affect Twitter’s popularity.

The annual tradition of the Queen’s speech is to be released as a free download for Amazon’s Kindle electronic book reader following the broadcast.

The Royal Household was approached with the idea by the UK’s largest online retailer.

The subsequent e-book will be exclusive to Amazon but it is understood that the text will also be made available on Facebook and via the official Royal Household website: www.royal.gov.uk.

Alongside this year’s speech, Kindle owners will be given the opportunity to download the Queen’s previous Christmas messages which now date back to 1952.

Google launches Android music service.

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

In its native United States online search giant Google has launched an online music store.

Currently known as Google Music, the service will allow Android handset owners to purchase, save and stream MP3 files.

It is understood that EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal and 23 other independent labels are set to provide content for the service, combining to create a store of 13 million songs available for download.

This move places Google in direct competition with Apple which launched its successful iTunes service in 2003.

Until now Apple has remained dominant within the online music market but critics have suggested that Google Music will pose a threat.

According to research by Gartner, more than half of all smartphones sold between July and September ran the Android operating system, equating to more than 60 million handsets.

Google has also announced plans to integrate Google Music with its Google+ social network.

Currently, Google has not commented on whether Google Music will become available outside of the US.

Cyber bullying to be addressed in Northern Ireland.

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Today marks the start of anti-bullying week with 650 schools across Northern Ireland set to explore the impact of cyber bullying.

The Department of Education research in Northern Ireland has released results of a recent survey which suggests 15.5% of Year 6 pupils and 17% of Year 9 pupils have experienced cyber bullying this year alone.

It is understood that three quarters of teachers present in post-primary schools surveyed claimed cyber bullying was more prevalent.

It is hoped that anti-bullying week will allow teachers and parents a channel in which to challenge all methods of bullying.

Cyber bullying can be conducted via mobile phones, online gaming, email and social networking.

Facebook app for iPad suffers glitches.

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

The Facebook iPad app has been long-awaited by many fans but since it was announced yesterday, many users have been reporting glitches with the service.

Facebook’s iPad application has been released 18 months after Apple’s first tablet computer was launched.

The application itself is said to be a replica of the existing Facebook for iPhone app which has been modified for the larger screen of the iPad.

Interestingly, the application allows users to ‘pinch to zoom’ and swipe photographs for easy viewing of images that fill the entire display.

Facebook has commented “as with all new technology products, occasionally unexpected bugs will surface once people start using products on a mass scale.”

It is hoped that the social networking giant will act quickly to rectify the current issues with its iPad application.

Facebook and Websense combat malicious sites.

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Social networking giant Facebook has partnered with security firm Websense in a bid to combat phishing and malware sites.

From next week, it is understood that users of the social networking site will receive a warning if they are about to enter a malicious website.

More than 700 million users have clicked on dangerous links to external websites via friend’s accounts which have been infected with a virus.

Once the user has clicked on the link and entered the site, personal data such as passwords and account data can be stolen.

Powered by Websense’s ‘Threatseeker Cloud’ system which stores a database of known malicious URL’s, Facebook’s new protocol will go some way towards making the social networking site a safer place to interact.

It is hoped that the introduction of this preventative method will rebuild user trust in the network.

Facebook to add subscribe button.

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Facebook has moved closer to competing with Twitter by including a subscribe button on user’s profile pages.

The new button allows a user to follow someone else’s public posts without necessarily having to be that person’s friend.

Celebrity users especially have welcomed the change as Facebook accounts are allowed a maximum of 5,000 friends.

This has forced a number of celebrities to create ‘pages’ for users to ‘like’, meaning that they have had to manage both a profile page and a fan page.

Recently, Facebook has released a number of other changes to make sure it can compete effectively against Google+ and other competitors.

These changes include simplifying its privacy controls, video chat and automated friend grouping.

Facebook is currently the leader in the social networking arena with over 900 million users and more than a trillion page views each month.
