Ofcom report reveals trends in telecoms.

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

According to research, British households download 17 gigabytes of data on average each month via their home broadband connections.

The report, conducted by communications regulator Ofcom, takes an in-depth look at the condition of the UK’s digital communications.

The study has revealed which regions offer suitable broadband, mobile and digital radio coverage and those which are lacking.

In order to visualise the research, Ofcom has produced maps which grade different regions in terms of the varying technologies that are supported within the area.

In the report, the UK is divided into 200 areas which are graded on a scale of 1-5 depending on how well particular technologies work within the region.

Areas with good scores included Birmingham, Lancashire and West Sussex.

However, sparsely populated areas such as mid-Wales and the Scottish highlands received low scores.

It is understood that the data collated through the research will be used to determine how to spend £150 million of Goverment funding to tackle the country’s not-spots.

Mobile manufacturers and patent wars.

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

The world’s leading mobile phone manufacturers are seeing a rise in patent litigation cases.

Recently manufacturing giants Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Google have all been subject to legal interrogation regarding the rights to technologies.

Interestingly, many experts have suggested that there has also been a significant increase in the amount of patent ‘trolls’ within the marketplace.

A patent ‘troll’ is a derogatory term given to organisations that agressively defend patent libraries without releasing products of their own.

Also known as ‘non-practicing entities’, these organisations, according to research, initiated more than 2,600 lawsuits against US companies in 2010.

This figure is more than five times the number that were filed in 2004.

This swell in patent lawsuits is cause for concern with many critics arguing that with companies having to budget for legal costs, less capital is available to fund third party innovations.

In America, the US patent system is currently undergoing reform, with the new rules due to come into effect in March 2013.

For now, it is certain that patent wars and subsequent lawsuits are set to continue.

Operating systems to be developed for cities.

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Operating systems are usually found in technological devices such as smartphones and computers but what if an entire city could be programmed?

It might not be very long before we find out.

Developed by McLaren Electronic Systems and known as ‘Urban OS’, this new innovation works in the same way as a standard operating system but this time, it’s able to keep buildings, traffic and services running smoothly throughout a city.

Urban OS is able to collate data from inbuilt sensors placed across a city to monitor what is happening at certain locations.

These sensors are able to monitor and react to the following:

  • Major incidents such as a road traffic accident, building fire or other disaster

or other devices which influence daily life in a city such as:

  • Traffic lights
  • Air conditioning
  • Water pumps and systems

Interestingly, to support the large number of different devices within a city, McLaren Electronic Services has developed a range of applications.

Currently known as PlaceApps, the applications have been developed with the aim that eventually, users would be able to use them in conjunction with the Urban OS to remotely control household appliances, energy systems or safety equipment.

It is understood that a prototype of the Urban OS is currently being constructed in Portugal.

Ofcom to ban roll-over fixed line agreements.

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Telecoms regulator Ofcom this week confirmed rollover contracts, which tie landline and broadband customers into repeated minimum contract periods unless they opt out, will be banned from December this year.

Known as Automatically Renewable Contracts (ARCs), the current agreements automatically roll over into a new minimum contract period which penalises the consumer for leaving, unless they actively opt out of the renewal.

It is understood that this ban across the communications sector will apply to ARCs for landline and broadband services which are sold to residential and SME customers.

It has been revealed that approximately 15 per cent of UK residential consumers are currently tied into rollover contracts.

Rollover contracts make it increasingly difficult for the consumer to move to a different provider which in turn minimises the amount of competition between providers within the industry.

Bank deadline for mobile recording looms ever closer.

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

All financial companies are required to record mobile phone calls starting 14th November 2011.

Despite the deadline, a survey conducted by Voicenet Solutions has found that many financial organisations have still not incorporated the appropriate technology.

What is even more alarming is that the survey found a number of companies that had no idea about the new regulations.

The new regulations, also known as the Financial Services Authority (FSA) mobile recording regulation PS10/17, means that any FSA regulated company has to record mobile phone conversations that relate to financial commodity markets, equities, bonds and derivatives for a period of six months.

A number of companies have complained about the cost of implementing the changes before the deadline date, citing costs well above £500,000 a year.

The FSA has hit back at these claims estimating that although initial costs will vary a cost between £300 and £500 per year, per user, is more probable.

The new regulations are hoped to provide an extra level of protection for companies and a new tool for compliance teams in the fight against rogue traders.

Technological ‘ghost town’ to be built in America.

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Pegasus Global Holdings, a US defence firm, is planning to spend $200 million over the next three years building a ‘ghost-town’.

The new town will be built in New Mexico, USA, and will include roads, buildings, phone, power and water lines, as well as a transportation highway.

The aim of the city is to test new technological infrastructure, including unmanned vehicles, wireless technology and intelligent transportation systems.

The facility will stretch over 20 square miles of desert and will be comparable to a mid-sized US city.

Universities and technological companies will be able to pay a fee to use the facility to test out their own inventions.

The new facility is expected to create over 3,500 jobs in the area, something that is currently high on the American political agenda.

The project is currently undergoing a feasibility study and is expected to be completed by 2014.

The red telephone box celebrates its 75th year.

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

A symbol of Britain, the red telephone box, celebrates its 75th birthday this year.

As much a beacon of Britannia as the red post box and the red double-decker bus, the red telephone box was originally a lifesaver for those who did not have a personal landline telephone.

Introduced in 1936 to commerate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V, the K6 telephone box became known as the “Jubilee Kiosk” and was designed by English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

The “Jubilee Kiosk” model became the first telephone box to be introduced across the country and were given to every town or village with a post office.

Due to this, more than 8,000 new boxes were installed in 1936 and by the end of production in 1968 there were nearly 70,000 in Britain.

It is understood that there are now 11,000 traditional red telephone boxes across the UK, some of which have been converted to art galleries, public libraries, exhibitions and art galleries through BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme.

However, with the smartphone industry showing no signs of slowing, it appears that the red telephone box is set to become a British relic confined to places of historical and architectural interest, museums and auctions.

Area codes put to use in new plan for local calls.

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

From 2012, people in the UK will need to dial the area code for local phone calls.

This move has been announced by telecoms regulator, Ofcom, in a bid to generate spare numbers in areas where there are few.

It is understood that the following towns look set to benefit from the change by 2016:

  • Bournemouth
  • Brighton
  • Aberdeen
  • Milton Keynes
  • Bradford
  • Cambridge

At the moment, there is no need for landline users to dial an area code when making a local call in the UK.

Ofcom recently reported that an audit of phone number use revealed that more than 69 million unused landline numbers were made available to the telecoms regulator by communications providers.

When the change is introduced, Ofcom will bring in numbers where the first digit following the area code will be 0 or 1.

IBM create microprocessors that mimic the human brain.

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

IBM has created the world’s first microprocessor that is close to replicating the how the human brain works.

The computer chip, titled the SyNAPSE system, is able to modify itself when new information is given to it.

The team at IBM is attempting to create a chip that is able to mimic the human mind through emotions, sensations and cognitions.

IBM is creating computer systems that work differently to the ones that are currently in use today. These systems, called cognitive computers, remember and learn from experiences just as the human brain does.

The company’s long-term aim is to create a chip with 10 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses which is able to run on just 1 kilowatt of electricity.

A speaker for the company suggested that someday soon these chips could be used in traffic control systems to monitor, listen, smell and check for unsafe conditions on our roads.

IBM has been awarded £12.7 million by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Motorola Mobility now owned by Google.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Last night Google announced that it has come to an agreement with Motorola Mobility to purchase the company for $12.5 billion.

The deal will give Google more control over devices that use its Android operating system. It will also give Google the ability to compete with Apple, a company which currently manufacturers its own hardware and software.

Google will also inherit more than 17,000 patents and over 7,000 currently pending patents from Motorola’s portfolio.

Since Google recently lost out to Nortel’s patents, largely to Apple, the purchase will aid the company in defending its Android operating system.

Motorola Mobility Holdings (MMI) share price surged by over 56% since the news broke last night.

Handset manufacturers that use Google’s free Android mobile operating systems all issued positive statements after the news broke.

All of the statements welcomed the deal showing that Google is serious about protecting its Android environment.
