Internet access in cars soon to be reality.

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

According to the bosses of leading car manufacturers, internet access inside vehicles is soon to become a reality.

A recent survey undertaken by KPMG has revealed that future trends including speech recognition and internet connection with the option of Wi-Fi and 3G services will soon become normality.

Interestingly, 37% of the 200 car executives surveyed think so-called in-vehicle ”info-tainment” is nearly as important as car safety.

It appears the idea of the “connected car” is continually gaining momentum.

It is expected that over the next five years, people looking to buy cars will have the option to take advantage of specialist in-vehicle technology and gadgets manufactured by big names including Google, Apple, Microsoft and LG.

At the end of 2011, Toyota and Intel announced their collaboration.

According to John Leech at KPMG, “Intel claims that the connected car is the third-fastest growing technological device, following smartphones and tablets”.

Similarly, Audi has also announced that the A7 will house in-built 3G connectivity with plans to extend this feature to other models.

So, when the time comes to upgrade your vehicle, will you consider a “connected car”?

British homes to become hi-tech hubs.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

According to a report by Intellect, British homes could be transformed into hi-tech hubs with in-built communications networks by the end of the decade.

Intellect, the trade body for the technology industry, has predicted that homes could deliver everything from advanced entertainment services to health care.

It has also said that a well established connected home market, worth an estimated £3 billion a year, could be a reality within five years.

Under the scheme homeowners would be able to control energy use, access public services including education and healthcare as well as receive new media and entertainment services, all linked into a variety of hi-tech devices such as Internet connected TVs, smartphones and tablet computers.

However, it has been suggested that this lifestyle will only happen if industries and the Government work together to adopt it.

Technical and security standards, training and certification for retailers and installers and active promotion will all need to be in place for the scheme to be successful.

Mega Monday set to boost sales online and via mobile.

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Today, or ‘Mega Monday’ as it is now known, is expected to be the busiest day of the year for online shopping with estimates suggesting that there will be 3,300 purchases made per minute.

However, whilst Christmas shopping online is now in full swing, the UK high streets are struggling, with sales down 2.1%.

Figures show that 2011 will be the third Christmas in a row where sales in physical shops have decreased.

On a positive note, 25% of all Christmas shopping this year will be done over the internet - a rise of 16% from last year.

Interestingly, 12% of online sales will be made via a smartphone with 2011 being hailed as the first ‘mobile’ Christmas.

Many shoppers have cited the ease, variety and choice as the main reason to shop via the internet, often using tablet devices to do so.

Video games, gadgets and DVDs are the most popular products to be purchased via the internet.

So, will you be heading to the high street or opting for online shopping this Christmas?

Phone battery flat? Take a walk!

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Researchers in America have developed a way to generate electricity from human motion meaning that soon, mobile phone users may be able to charge their devices as they take a stroll.

The device is placed in a shoe and then works by capturing the energy generated by moving micro droplets which can then be converted in to an electrical current.

The power generated by this process, according to the project researchers, is enough to charge a mobile phone or laptop.

However, scientists have said that transferring the energy created to a device is complicated.

Without wishing to plug a USB cable directly into the shoe from the device, researchers have presented the idea that the electricity-generating device could be connected to a shoe-bound wireless transmitter.

Bluetooth or WiFi technology could then be used to pass signals between the unit and the user’s handset in order to connect the two devices.

In the near future it is hoped that this technology will be accessible to the public.

10 year old stuns hackers at DefCon Kids meeting.

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

A 10 year old has stunned a number of leading hackers at the DefCon Kids hacker convention in Las Vegas.

The hacker, who goes by the handle CyFi, demonstrated how she found a number of security flaws in mobile games while being bored.

Some games require players to wait for a certain period of time to redeem in-game benefits such as tools and prizes. CyFi, who was bored of waiting for these benefits, decided to look for a way around them and in doing so, was able to advance the device’s internal clock.

By doing this incrementally she was able to avoid the games in-build ability to detect and block this kind of cheating.

The flaw, which was verified by independent security experts, opens up the possibility of an attacker inserting their own code into a device and retrieving valuable user data.

The game titles left vulnerable have not been announced so that developers have time to fix the loopholes.

However, it is understood that the titles are available for both the Apple and Android products.

Android users receive The Cloud’s hotspot app.

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Android users will finally be able to get their fingers on The Cloud’s hotspot app ‘FastConnect’ after the organisation released a new version for Android.

The Cloud, owned by BSkyB, is wi-fi hotspot provider throughout Europe. Its users can connect to a number of hotspot points around the continent to take advantage of speedy connection speeds.

There are over 4,800 hotspots provided by The Cloud in the UK, located in places such as McDonalds and Pizza Express.

The smartphone app allows users to find the closest wi-fi hotspots and displays the search results on a map for them.

Since 2009 there have been over 500,000 downloads of The Cloud’s FastConnect application, forcing the organisation’s network to grow quickly.

IEEE proposes broadband coverage over 62 miles.

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a not-for-profit organisation that commits itself to technological innovation and advancements, has published a new 802.22 standard for Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRANs).

The IEEE proposes using the so-called ‘whitespaces’ between television UHF and UHV bandwidth for wi-fi signals.

The research, conducted in the United States, proposes that speeds up to 22MBps can be achieved over an area of 62 miles (100 km) using just one wi-fi hotspot.

The big advantage of using long-range frequencies, such as those used by television, means mobile providers can use fewer transmitters while simultaneously covering a much larger area.

Consumers in rural areas of the UK would also benefit from this technology as, it has been suggested, coverage in these areas at present is inadequate.

Tesco plans to create thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots.

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Tesco has announced that it plans to trial free Wi-Fi hotspots in four of its supermarkets.

If the trial is successful the company has suggested that it will roll-out free Wi-Fi to the rest of its stores.

With over 2,700 stores in the UK, this move could be good for Tesco customers with smartphones who are frustrated with the lack of service available while in supermarkets.

It could also prove beneficial to office employees who need to be in continual contact with work.

Tesco’s idea behind the free Wi-Fi hotspots is for users to be able to quickly compare prices and find deals in-store. The company already has smartphone applications available for download so that consumers can easily find offers and products throughout their local stores.

However, Tesco has warned that if people abuse the service by downloading large amounts of data, then a roll-out across the UK would not be feasible.

With McDonald’s and Starbucks already offering free Wi-Fi hotspots, Tesco joining in could help to boost the UK’s Wi-Fi coverage.
