Today, as defense against online danger is highlighted by Safer Internet Day, families across the UK are being urged to discover the digital world together.
This is the 9th global Safer Internet Day and this year’s theme – Connecting Generations – sets out to highlight the benefits of sharing internet safety tips and advice at home.
Interestingly:
- 73% of 9-16 year olds feel they benefit from talking to their parents about internet use
- 68% of children say their parents always know what they are doing online
Research shows that parents who talk to their children about the internet, help to protect against online risks.
The research also suggests that open dialogue and active mediation can reduce children’s exposure to safety risks without reducing their online opportunities.
According to new BBC research, this also works the other way, with benefits to be gained from the younger generation too:
- 67% of young people help their parents or carers to use the internet
- Of these, 11% of young people help with safety features and privacy settings
- 21% of young people help to set security settings to protect against viruses and spyware on the family computer
The UK Safer Internet Centre also has its own dedicated website (http://www.saferinternet.org.uk/) where visitors can find out the latest advice on how to use the internet and new technologies safely and responsibly.
Users will also find find a range of practical resources, news and events focusing on the safe and responsible use of the internet and new technologies – including a free, online quiz: The Internet Safety IQ test.
Today is the day to find out your Internet Safety IQ, connect together and openly discuss the safe use of the internet.
