Mobile broadband auctions are given the go ahead.

It has been a long time coming but the auctioning off of next-generation mobile services is one step nearer.

After months of discussions between mobile phone operators, the UK Government has announced that the auctions will take place in late 2011.

Ofcom has been instructed to regulate and co-ordinate the auction as soon as possible by the Minister for Communications Ed Vaizey.

It is hoped that these sales will create new mobile broadband offerings and improve mobile coverage across the UK with the 800MHz and the 2.6GHz bands to be auctioned.

However, UK operators are anxious to see how the new and existing spectrums will be divided between them.

The 800MHz band, which is now available thanks to the switchover to digital TV, allows mobile signals to travel over greater distances and it is hoped that it will be used to bring broadband to rural areas.

In contrast, the 2.6GHz band offers higher capacity and will be used in built up areas such as towns and cities where there are a high percentage of users that require reliable service.

The UK market is currently at the forefront of technology, providing the latest smartphones and leading innovations like the iPad, but these devices require sturdy and reliable networks in order to improve and increase service levels.

Only time will tell whether or not the auctions will bring significant change to mobile broadband in the UK.

I completely agree with the above comments. The internet and telecoms are, without doubt, growing into the most essential medium of communication across the globe and its due to websites like this that suggestions are spreading so quickly.
