Raspberry Pi computers to be delivered this week.

April 16th, 2012

A batch of Raspberry Pi computers is set to be delivered to a group of schoolchildren in Leeds this Friday.

The eagerly awaited minimalist computer costs just £16 per unit and it is hoped that the device will encourage young schoolchildren to take an interest in computer programming.

In order to mark the occasion, Eben Upton, Project Co-ordinator, will present the computers to the children at the offices of  Premier Farnell – a Pi distributor with offices in Leeds.

A masterclass on programming will then follow the presentation to demonstrate the machine to the students.

Developers, computer enthusiasts and IT experts have all shown a varied interest in the device following its invention and subsequent development.

Members of the public who pre-ordered the device should expect to receive their Raspberry Pi by 20 April.

Earthquake? There’s an app for that.

April 13th, 2012

A free app that will alert citizens when an earthquake is expected to happen has been unveiled by civil authorities in Mexico.

Marcelo Ebrard, Mayor of Mexico City, recently announced the application on behalf of the city’s Civil Protection service.

The application works by sounding an alarm on the phone if an earthquake reaches a magnitude of 6.5 or higher.

Interestingly, even if the phone it set to silent, the signal received will set off a sound and vibration to alert the user.

The application has been developed for Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS platform as its devices are the only ones able to send out alerts to a large amount of users up to five seconds from when the signal is first given.

However, if other smartphone manufacturers were able to step up to the mark and offer this level of service, the authorities have said that they would be happy to work alongside them too.

Mexico’s Seismological Service has given Research in Motion access to the signal which monitors earthquake activity across regional stations.

In effect, whilst it may only give people a few seconds’ notice, it is hoped that the application could allow people the time to get to a safe place and, potentially, save lives.

E-textiles to reform British soldiers’ uniforms.

April 12th, 2012

Yarn that is able to conduct electricity could soon be woven directly into soldiers’ uniforms to replace the need to carry heavy batteries and cabling.

Known as “e-textiles”, this material could be used to provide servicemen and women with a single power source.

Similarly, it would also offer the ability to recharge one single battery and reduce the number of cables that are required to be carried by personnel.

The fabric has been integrated in to a soldiers’ vest, shirt, helmet, backpack, glove and weapons.

Intelligent Textiles, a Surrey based company, unveiled the lightweight uniform at a recent event hosted by the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE).

The company received £234,000 from the CDE  in order to research and manufacture the material and has also secured a number of patents relating to techniques for weaving complex conductive fabrics.

Field trials are scheduled for May and, in a limited respect, the system could be used by the end of this year.

It is predicted that the lightweight uniforms will see widespread use in 2014 – 2015.

Historical timeline of the internet unveiled in exhibition.

April 11th, 2012

The history of the internet is now offline and on show in a new gallery at the National Media Museum in Bradford.

The exhibition called Life Online or LOL, in homage to internet slang, has been created to explore the social, technological and cultural impact of the internet.

The permanent gallery, which is free to visit, traces the history of the internet, uncovers how it has changed people’s lives and track the latest trends.

Through the project  - which cost £2 million raised from development funds, donations and sponsorship – it is hoped that visitors will be able to chart the rise of the most used resource in our history.

Interestingly, the exhibition is the first permanent one of its nature to showcase the history of the internet in the UK.

Something quite ‘Pinterest’ing…

April 10th, 2012

At Total Ltd, we maintain our various social media accounts, regularly updating our Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn accounts.

With so many social networking sites that come and go – how can you possibly pick one that is here for the long haul?

Well, there is a new network that is swiftly making its mark on the social media scene  - Pinterest – and we are keen to check it out.

Some of you may already be keen Pinterest users. However, we wanted to post a blog article which would answer some of the questions we had ourselves about this new site.

After all, if we have been thinking them, the chances are that others would be as well.

Firstly, what is Pinterest?

Quite simply, users of this growing social network site take interesting images and pin them on to a virtual noticeboard, hence its name.

Based on visual sharing, Pinterest focuses on users collating media such as pictures, videos, discussions or products, known as “pins”, that have been collected from across the internet on one “board” or a number of “boards”.

All of this has helped to make Pinterest the fastest website in history to reach 21 million unique worldwide visitors per month.

So, why should I use it?

Just like any other social media account, Pinterest-goers use the site to promote websites, expand their social networks and create talking points.

Originally designed as a lifestyle product for sharing just about everything, Pinterest has grown and adapted with its audience and its forum now offers “boards” on everything from recipes and holiday ideas to business knowledge and brand generation.

With a little bit of imagination, who knows  what you could create.

How do I get a Pinterest account?

To register for Pinterest, new users must receive an invitation from a friend already registered on Pinterest or request an invitation directly from the Pinterest website.

The registration process currently requires users to link their Pinterest account to their Facebook or Twitter account.

Users choosing to log in via Facebook must be using (or opt in to) Facebook’s “Timeline” format.

Here at Total Ltd, we are working on getting our dedicated Pinterest site up and running. We look forward to seeing you there soon.

Lauren Hanks, Total Ltd, awarded Outstanding Apprentice of the Year.

April 5th, 2012

Lauren Hanks, Service Administrator at Total Ltd has been awarded Outstanding Apprentice of the Year in the Financial and Business Services sector of the Gloucestershire Apprenticeships Awards.

The Princess Royal was guest of honour at the first-ever Gloucestershire Apprenticeships Awards run by The Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo in association with Clarkson Evans.

Whilst studying for her A-Levels, Lauren maintained her interest in Business but quickly realised that the number of University graduates obtaining suitable jobs in their chosen sector was extremely low, due she felt to excessive applications for the same vacancy and the lack of work experience possessed by many.

This prompted Lauren to apply for a Business and Admin NVQ level 2 and BTEC Apprenticeship; she hasn’t looked back.

The Princess was introduced to the apprentice finalists and also presented some awards to finalists before the presentation dinner was held in the Centaur at Cheltenham racecourse last night.

In total, there were 12 awards and the evening was hosted by Claire Young, a former finalist in TV’s The Apprentice.

Well done Lauren!

Sat-nav devices face GPS signal glitch due to leap year.

April 4th, 2012

TomTom, the Dutch satellite navigation system manufacturer, has announced that a GPS signal fault that has been reported on certain devices is due to a “leap year bug”.

The global positioning system or GPS code which is embedded into all TomTom gadgets has rendered a number of models unable to locate their position.

Users are then left with a grey screen which says the appliance is unable to connect to a GPS signal.

TomTom models worldwide have been affected by this problem.

Potentially affected sat-nav systems are as follows:

  • Start 20/25
  • Via 120/125
  • Via LIVE 120/125
  • GO LIVE 820/825
  • GO LIVE 1000/1005/1005 World

If sat-nav signal is found to be a problem, TomTom has advised consumers to follow these simple steps:

  1. Install MyTomTom
If you haven’t already installed MyTomTom on your computer, go to tomtom.com/getstarted

  2. Connect your navigation device to your computer and switch it on.
    MyTomTom will open.
  3. Download the update.
If MyTomTom doesn’t automatically check for updates, click Check for new items.
A window opens showing the updates available for download. You will need to log in. If you don’t have a MyTomTom account you will need to create one. Click Start downloading.  Do not disconnect your device until it has finished the installation and has rebooted.
  4. Reset your navigation device.
Press and hold the On/Off button until you hear the drum sounds and the device restarts. This takes at least 20 seconds.
  5. Take your device outdoors.
To check if your device is able to get a GPS position after installing the update, make sure to take your device outdoors in clear view of the sky. The first fix after installing the update could take several minutes.

Since this issue was first reported on the 31st of March, TomTom has kept consumers up to date with fix times and has apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Online tablet computer store for Google.

April 3rd, 2012

Search giant Google is planning to open an online store which will allow consumers to purchase tablet computers directly.

It is understood that Google tablets will be stocked alongside other models manufactured by companies such as Samsung and Asus.

This move has been widely viewed as an attempt by Google to win back a part of Apple’s dominant market share.

However, Google faces tough competition; according to Gartner, 70% of all tablets that are sold are iPads.

Industry experts have suggested that Google would be wise to act quickly as consumer demand for tablet computers is steadily increasing.

Amazon’s Kindle Touch was launched in the last quarter of 2011 and the device is set to become comercially available across Europe later this month.

Similarly, Microsoft’s touch screen optimised Windows 8 is due to be launched this Autumn.

As yet, a date for the online store opening has not been announced.

Government plans to monitor communication face criticism.

April 2nd, 2012

Government plans could see calls, emails, texts and internet visits of each person in the UK monitored in a bid to step up security measures in the Olympic year.

New legislation which is soon to be announced would require internet firms to disclose details of real-time communications to intelligence agency GCHQ.

Whilst the Home Office has stipulated that these measures are designed to combat crime and terrorism, civil liberty campaigners have argued that this move attacks online privacy and is a step towards the surveillance currently seen in places such as China and Iran.

However, the Internet Service Providers Association has said that any change must be “proportionate, respect freedom of expression and the privacy of users”.

Interestingly, it is not yet certain that these plans will be put in to place.

Even if the law is announced in the Queen’s May Speech, it would still have to be passed by Parliament and face potential opposition in both the Commons and the Lords.

Only time will tell whether these surveillance measures get the go ahead.

Mobile companies lose £36bn a year to billing errors and fraud.

March 30th, 2012

Juniper Research has issued a report which reveals that mobile phone companies are losing £36bn a year worldwide to billing errors and fraudulent activities.

It is understood that network complexity makes it much more difficult to spot and correct anomalies in the system.

In Africa and the Middle East the problem is rife with 15% of revenue lost annually.

This figure compares to the amount of revenue that is lost in Europe (1%) and North America (2.8%) each year.

The report suggests that mobile firms in western countries have more customers in contract than those in developing nations which are focused on building subscriber databases rather than setting up control measures.

Interestingly, whilst billing errors may be traceable and recoverable for mobile firms, fraudulent activity is not.

The report has identified 12 different types of fraud that have been committed by mobile users.

One of these methods is known as “interconnect bypass”, an instance when users pass off a fixed to mobile international call as a local mobile conversation.

Similarly, subscription fraud is also on the rise with an increase in the number of accounts being activated using stolen identification or false credentials.

SIM card cloning is also a common problem.

In a similar survey undertaken by KPMG, 94% of telecom operators surveyed revealed that they expected the threat of revenue leakage to increase and almost 49% believed that the increase would be significant.

It remains to be seen how this revenue loss can be prevented in the future.
