Reports suggest that computer software giant Microsoft could be working on a smartphone in a bid to expand its range of hardware devices.
It is understood that speculation regarding the device started when an Asian component supplier to Microsoft revealed that the multinational is currently testing a smartphone design.
However, officials were then quick to say that it is unclear whether the rumoured handset is set for mass production.
If the software giant goes ahead with the launch of its own smartphone, the device is expected to have a 4-5 inch screen.
If released, a Microsoft smartphone with this screen size would then directly compete with current leaders in the market – the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Reports also suggest that a smartphone from Microsoft may also double as a handheld gaming device.
This would allow Microsoft to not only enter the smartphone market but to also join the handheld games industry which is currently dominated by Sony and Nintendo.
